Ultimate Dubai Guide: Top Things to Do & See

If you’ve ever wanted to sip coffee in the clouds and then wander through an old-school souk right after, Dubai’s your kind of place. It’s like the past and the future teamed up—skyscrapers on one corner, spice markets on the next, with fancy restaurants and street food tucked in between. Everything here is bigger, flashier, and honestly, a bit surreal (in the best way).

I’ve checked out most of these spots myself—so this isn’t just tourist fluff. These are my real, go-to picks!

Marvel at the Burj Khalifa & Dubai Fountain Show

You can’t visit Dubai without at least one moment of oh wow at the Burj Khalifa. This is the tallest building in the world, and whether you’re gazing up from below or taking in the view from the observation deck, it’s breathtaking.

Right next door is the Dubai Mall—more than just a mall, it’s practically its own city. You’ll find everything from an ice rink to a giant aquarium. I loved just wandering, popping into random shops, and grabbing a coffee while people-watching.

At night, don’t miss the Dubai Fountain Show. It’s free and runs every 30 minutes after sunset, with water jets and music that’ll give you goosebumps (and make you feel a bit like you’re in a movie).

  • Pro Tip: The best view? Grab an outdoor table at one of the restaurants around the water. Just be prepared for the crowds—it’s a popular spot for a reason!

Dine with a View at Dinner in the Sky

If you’re feeling a little adventurous (and not afraid of heights), book a meal with Dinner in the Sky. Picture this: you, 50 meters above the ground, dangling from a crane, enjoying a gourmet meal with the Dubai skyline as your backdrop.

It’s definitely a splurge, but it’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences you’ll talk about for years.

Step Back in Time at Dubai Creek & the Souks

While Dubai’s skyline screams futuristic, there’s another side of the city that’s all about tradition. Head to Dubai Creek—a winding waterway that was once the heart of the city’s trade scene.

Here, you can hop on a traditional wooden abra boat for just a couple of dirhams and glide across the creek like traders did generations ago. It’s a charming, laid-back ride that’s perfect for taking a break from the city buzz.

On the Deira side of the creek, dive into the Gold Souk and Spice Souk. Even if you’re not buying, it’s an experience—laneways packed with glittering jewelry, fragrant spices, and shopkeepers who’ll happily chat you up.

Visit the Dubai Frame

Want the best view of “old” and “new” Dubai? Head to the Dubai Frame. This giant golden rectangle might look like an art installation (and it kind of is!), but inside, it’s an observation deck with panoramic views that tell the story of the city’s evolution.

Explore the Museum of the Future

If the Burj Khalifa is Dubai’s icon, the Museum of the Future is its architectural flex. This shiny silver loop is all about what’s next—robotics, sustainability, space travel, and everything in between.

Get Lost in Global Village

If your passport’s feeling lonely, Global Village is your cure. Part theme park, part open-air market, it’s a kaleidoscope of culture from around the world. There are pavilions for a wide variety of countries—each with its own food, shopping, and performances.

It’s a seasonal event (October to April), but if you’re around while it’s open, don’t miss it!

Catch a Show at La Perle

If you’re craving something truly jaw-dropping, La Perle is your answer. It’s a live show with acrobatics, diving, and stage magic that’ll have you gasping out loud (I definitely did).

Theme Park Thrills at Motiongate

It’s all about Hollywood—roller coasters, shows, and rides inspired by your favorite movies.

Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or just want to feel like a kid again, Motiongate is a fun break from the usual city sights.

Beach Time & Chill Vibes

No Dubai trip is complete without a little beach time. If you’re staying at Hotel Riu Dubai, you’re all set—it’s an all-inclusive beachfront spot with everything you need for lazy days and salty hair.

Not staying there? No worries. La Mer and JBR Beach are both great public options with beach clubs, restaurants, and that perfect “I’m on vacation” energy.

Escape to the Desert

When you’re in Dubai, trading the city lights for golden sands is a must. Book a desert safari and get ready for an adventure: think 4×4 dune bashing (hold on tight!), camel rides, and a Bedouin-style dinner under the stars.

Day Trip to Abu Dhabi

If you’re up for a little side quest, consider a day trip to Abu Dhabi. The highlight is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque—pure white marble, epic domes, and chandeliers that will make your jaw drop.

There’s also the ultra-modern Qasr Al Watan palace and a growing art scene that’s worth exploring. It’s a quick drive from Dubai and a chance to see another side of the UAE.

Where to Stay in Dubai

Sonder – Really enjoyed our stay here! Apartment-style rooms with great design and a local feel.
Hotel Riu Dubai – All-inclusive and beachfront—ideal for beach bums. Some of the best buffet food I’ve had at an all-inclusive!
Hyatt Regency – A reliable luxury choice with subway access!
Raffles the Palm – If you’re going all-out on luxury, this is your place.

Final Thoughts

Dubai doesn’t really do subtle—everything here is bigger, taller, shinier. But honestly, that’s part of the fun. Beyond all the skyscrapers and fancy malls, there’s so much more to discover—hidden cafés, buzzing souks, and friendly locals.

For me, Dubai was all about the mix—one minute you’re drinking mint tea in a centuries-old market, the next you’re watching a show that looks like it belongs in the future. It’s fast, flashy, and full of surprises—but somehow, it still feels easy to sink into.
