Best Things to See and Do in Abu Dhabi

When I first arrived in Abu Dhabi, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. But it surprised me, and, in my opinion, actually might be even better than Dubai… Yes, you’ve got flashy towers and luxury malls, but there’s also quiet mangrove forests, centuries-old traditions, and some of the most stunning sunsets I’ve ever seen.

Here’s my friendly guide to the best things to see and do in Abu Dhabi! Plus some helpful tips to make your trip smooth, fun, and unforgettable.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Let’s start with the showstopper. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the largest and most beautiful mosques in the world, with pure white marble, intricate floral designs, and chandeliers dripping in crystals.

The moment you walk through the entrance, the scale of it almost takes your breath away. The polished white floors seem to stretch on forever, and the reflection of the arches in the water makes it feel otherworldly.

Practical tips:

  • Cost: Free to enter. We went with this tour, which I highly recommend!
  • Dress code: Women need to cover arms, legs, and hair; men should avoid shorts. Abayas are provided if needed.
  • Plan for about 1–2 hours here so you can explore without rushing.

Louvre Abu Dhabi

A museum that looks like it’s floating on water? Yes, please! The Louvre Abu Dhabi is a masterpiece in itself.

Inside, you’ll find exhibits arranged by themes rather than geography or time period. So you’ll see unexpected pairings that make you think differently about art and history. We spent 3 hours wandering around here time just flew by!

Tip: The outdoor areas are just as photogenic as the galleries. Bring water, though. Even in winter, the sun can be strong.

Ferrari World

Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or just a casual car admirer, Ferrari World is home to the world’s fastest roller coaster; Formula Rossa. It launches you from 0 to 240 km/h in under five seconds, and yes, it’s as intense as it sounds!

Beyond that, there are simulators, go-kart tracks, and family-friendly rides. If adrenaline isn’t your thing, it’s still worth visiting just for the Ferrari displays and the air-conditioning (you’ll thank me in August).

Warner Bros. World

This one’s pure fun. Imagine stepping into cartoon worlds you grew up watching! Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo, Batman, Wonder Woman, all under one giant, climate-controlled roof.

It’s easy to spend a full day at Warner Bros. World without realizing it, especially if you’re traveling with kids or just a big kid at heart. My tip? Go early to hit the most popular rides before the midday rush.

Desert Safari

If you’ve never been to the desert, a safari is an absolute must. Start the day with dune bashing (speeding over rolling sand dunes in a 4×4) which is part roller coaster, part “hold on and hope your lunch stays put.” Then camel rides, sandboarding, henna painting, and a traditional dinner under the stars.

Pro tip: Bring a scarf or bandana. It helps with the dust!

Mangrove National Park

This is Abu Dhabi’s quiet side. Mangrove National Park is a peaceful escape where you can kayak or paddleboard through shaded waterways, spotting herons, flamingos, and even turtles if you’re lucky.

Go early morning or late afternoon for cooler weather. If you’re not feeling active, you can also join a boat tour and just sit back to enjoy the views.

Corniche Beach & Marina Mall

Corniche Beach is a gorgeous stretch of soft sand with calm, turquoise water which is perfect for a lazy day. It’s clean, safe, and has plenty of cafes and shaded spots.

When you’ve had your fill of the sun, head over to Marina Mall for shopping, coffee, and even an indoor ice rink. It’s a nice mix of local and international brands, and you can cool off while you browse.

Abu Dhabi Heritage Village

If you want to understand Abu Dhabi before the skyscrapers, this is the place. The Heritage Village is a reconstructed traditional village where you can see old-style homes, a souk, and even artisans making pottery and weaving.

It’s small, but worth a visit for the insight into Emirati culture, and the views back toward the modern skyline are incredible.

Saadiyat Island

Saadiyat Island feels like another world. It’s home to incredible beaches, art centres, and luxury resorts, but it also has protected sea turtle nesting sites. If you want a peaceful, upscale vibe for the day, this is your spot.

Tip: Beach club day passes can be pricey, but they often include food and drink credit, which makes it a better deal.

Grand Mosque, Royal Palace & Etihad Tower Tour

If you’re short on time, book a guided tour that combines the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque with the Royal Palace (Qasr Al Watan) and Etihad Tower observation deck. It’s the most efficient way to see Abu Dhabi’s architectural icons without worrying about transport.

Where to Eat in Abu Dhabi

  • Yas Marina – Tons of great dining options with a view of yachts and the waterfront!
  • Little Soho – Cozy, stylish, and ideal for brunch or coffee.
  • Bravo Lounge and Restaurant – A relaxed dinner spot with a mix of local and international options.

Where to Stay in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi has no shortage of gorgeous stays, but I found these three to be perfect for different travel vibes — whether you’re chasing ocean views, city convenience, or a luxurious escape. We stayed at the Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort. Central location, private beach, and great service. Highly recommend.

Other great options:

Suggested Itinerary: 3 Days in Abu Dhabi

Day 1: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque → Louvre Abu Dhabi → Corniche Beach sunset
Day 2: Lay by the pool in the morning → Desert Safari in the afternoon → Marina Mall in the evening
Day 3: Mangrove National Park kayaking → Saadiyat Island beach afternoon → Yas Marina dinner

Getting Around

Public transport isn’t the most efficient here, so taxis and rideshares (Careem or Uber) are your best bet. If you plan to visit several attractions in one day, booking a driver or joining a small group tour can save time and money.

Final Thoughts

Abu Dhabi is one of those rare destinations where you can go from relaxing on a quiet beach to walking through a royal palace in the same day, and somehow, it all feels seamless. Whether you’re here for art, adrenaline, food, or culture, you’ll leave with a camera full of photos and a mind full of “wow” moments.

If you’re already this far in the UAE, I recommend pairing your trip with a few days in Dubai. It’s only about 90 minutes away and has a completely different energy. Check out my Ultimate Dubai Guide here!
